Greg Tucker – Economics Editor

The recent UK referendum campaign was seemingly sold on factual inaccuracy, manipulation of statistics and, most importantly, dismissal of economists. Perhaps if there had been greater economic literacy among the electorate, the campaign’s quality and result would have been much more impressive. As members of the younger generation, it is therefore vital to recognise the importance of the social sciences in shaping our future – especially as we enter times of such great economic uncertainty.

Despite there being many valid economic reasons to break from the European single market, it felt as if other reasons (especially dangerous political journalism) played a more important role in determining the campaign’s result. In fact, in a country where the circulation of tabloid publications like the Daily Mail and The Sun is at an all-time high, their official endorsement of the “Leave” campaign may explain why it attracted 52% of voters. Therefore, as Economics Editor, I recognise the media’s widespread influence, and aim to contribute enriching (or at least interesting) articles to the library that already exists on this page. And, as students who will grow up to face the consequences of such an important political and economic decision, an improved knowledge of the social sciences will prepare us for any problems that may surface in the future.
